    * Injury update: Aaron Harang threw 70 feet without complain today. Jerry Hairston Jr. started his running program without complaint today.

    * Griffey was asked about giving his batting helmet to that kid last night. He said the kidheld up a 606 sign and Griffey told him that if he hit one in that at-bat, he'd give him his helmet. He did and he did.

    * Josh Fogg said he's been called in to pinch hit and bunt "four or five times" in his career. He has 52 career sacrifices, including two this season.

"The dude's good at it, it would have either been him or Arroyo, but Arroyo is pitching (Wednesday)," Baker said of Fogg bunting.

"A lot of people don't understand (using Fogg as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning on Monday)," Baker said. "When you have five extra men, you really only have four because you have to keep a catcher back and you really only have three, because Javy's going to be my pinch hitter later in the game. That guy Hensley is throwing sinker, slider in a straight double play position and we want to get (David Ross) in a scoring position for Jay Bruce coming up next. I asked (Bill) Bray (the pitcher) if he's a good bunter and he said he's never done it. I said, 'nevermind.'

"So I looked down the list and usually Fogg gets the bunt down. The other day I had Cabrera up there to pinch hit and bunt and I'd rather not do that because that guy's prone to double plays and you don't want to hit and run because Ross would be out by a mile. Through process of elimination and trying to figure out how to get that run home, it was Fogg.

"I had Fogg slash bunting and he hadn't missed a sign all year. He was so locked in and focused on getting the bunt down, he missed it. I've done that with guys like Greg Maddux who can really bunt."

    On bunting...

"The thing about it is, you've got a chance of getting a bunt down 7 or 8 out of 10 times, you've got a chance at a hit 3 out of 10 times and you've got a chance of hitting into a double play 4 or 5 times out of 10 if it's a sinker, slider type of guy. It's all about the odds and who's pitching against you, it's about the scoreboard, the inning, everything. We've been stressing (bunting) since I've been there. They bunt every day. They bunt one to the left side and one to the right side and if they don't get one down, they do it again and they keep doing it until they get one down."

    * On Ross in the ninth:

"There's a time when they would ahve gotten on me for letting Ross hit last night, but he's had some really good at-bats in tough situations, he's gotten big hits or walks in big situations. Last night's one of the few times he hasn't come through in some way."

    * On Hoffman vs. Bruce:

"he had him right where he wanted him, 2-0, or was it 3-1, when he threw him that piece of **** changeup? He had him 2-0. (Bruce) has probably never seen anything like that. Just like when first base was open and that double play I've never seen. He wanted to do it so badly he tricked him. That happens when you're young. In a couple of years he won't swing at that ball. Hopefully sooner than a couple of years. In a couple of years he'll spit at that ball."

    * Joey Votto will get a day off against Jake Peavy.

"We gotta give Javy a couple starts here tojkeep him sharp," Baker said. The stats say the two guys here that hit Peavy are him and Corey. I thoguth about giving Corey a start, but the last two starts he's had have been against C.C. and Peavy, and not playing, that's not fair."

Checking Dusty's facts, Patterson is 5-for-11 against Peavy and Valentin is 5-for-10 and both have homers off of him. Dunn is the only other Red to have homered off of Peavy, and he's hitting just .167 against him. Jolbert Cabrera has a single in his only at-bat against Peavy, the only other active Red above .200 against Peavy is Jeff Keppinger (1-for-4).

    * We walked into Baker's office and there were two knives on his desk.

"Looks like Homer's been here," I said.

"No, Homer's going to be here," Baker said. "They need sharpening and I don't have my stone. I hope he has one."

Baker said it was his filet knife and another knife. Bailey usually has a knife on his belt.

    * 4:51 UPDATE: Reds pitcher Josh Fogg was taken off the field during batting practice when he was hit in the face by a ball hit by Joey Votto.

    * FOGG UPDATE (6:19): Fogg was hit in the mouth, he's being taken to Beacon Orthopaedic Center where he will be examined.

Hope Fogg is alright. Sounds like a freak thing. With how far out pitchers are during BP it certainly seems surprising.
