    What I'm hearing

Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 08:11 PM EST [Reds]

I've heard that not only has Micah Owings not cleared waivers, but he was claimed by a team with a worse record than the Reds.

That would mean it could only be one of four teams -- the Mariners, Giants, Padres and, yes, the Washington Nationals.

You think ol' Leatherpants put one in just as a final middle finger to his old team before he's canned? Don't be surprised if he did. (And, yes, I've heard it was him)

What would happen then -- if it's Owings (and, well, from what's being said, reported, etc., it is) -- is that the Diamondbacks would have to pull him off of waivers and he wouldn't be able to come to Cincinnati until after the season. Not a major blow, butan annoyance nonetheless.

It would not surprise me if Leatherpants did that. What a jerk! This will be his last job in MLB...

Now I have a question. If it is owings that is the player to be Named. What happens if during this time he gets injured and has Tommy John surgery. Would the reds beable to get other compensation or is it just tough luck??

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it be only the Padres, Giants and Nats? I don't fully understand waivers but I thought it was the teams league gets dibs then goes to the other league.

If Owings did get taken and is pulled off that would all but confirm him as one of the other players right?

You're right, only teams from the same league get dibs at first. That's a good question about the TJ surgery, but from reports it's not his elbow/arm, but his shoulder, which could be just as bad I guess. Trent, if Owings has to get pulled back and not moved til the end of the season, could they name him and the other guy, and assuming the other guy clears, go ahead and move him? This is confusing!

So if it is Owings and the Dbacks have to pull him back. Can the Reds then request that he sit out and rest the shoulder?
